Something I’m getting more than a little sick of

The amount of hate there is against people who are not sex workers, discussing sex work.

A LOT of people have been throwing this around the tumblrsphere lately and if it’s intended in a different context, then it’s probably worth clarifying, the blanket statements are starting to get a bit tired.

I talk to a lot of non sex worker’s about sex work. Often because they’re fairly keen to get a realistic point of view, rather than just rambling on about what new rumor they heard from this person and that person and the flipping media. Admittedly, I take a lot of the ‘information’ I get in these conversations, from non sex workers, with a grain of salt, because it is difficult to know where it’s come from or what their influences are.

But I think dialogue about the industry, especially to dispel a lot of the hyperbole that seems to be a constant blight on constructive conversation, is important and should be encouraged, not dismissed and hated on.

Let me make it clear: I’ve had conversations that I wouldn’t even refer to as conversations and it DOES piss me off when people talk about the industry like they’re experts, when they really haven’t got a clue. But if someone I know gets in to a conversation and starts discussing things I’ve said, in terms of a more realistic and first hand view, to someone who may have no idea, then I don’t have any issues with that.

I have great faith in the power of discussing issues and education, I don’t think there should be a blanket ban on people talking about the sex industry just because they haven’t been there. Imagine if we started applying this to everything? There goes 90% of every documentary on the planet -.-
